In-home behavioral therapy consulting

An individualized program for each student will be developed based on a thorough assessment of his or her basic language and learning skills and social cognition skills. This program may include treatment for language delays, academic challenges, self-help skills, and problem behaviors such as non-compliance, repetitive behavior, self-injury, and aggression. A structured program may be recommended employing Discrete trial training where core skills are broken down into manageable parts and taught systematically using prompting strategies and a positive reinforcement system. These sub-skills are taught until mastered, and then those skills are used to build new skills. Challenging behaviors are analyzed, and a program is developed to reduce those behaviors while replacing them with socially-acceptable replacement behaviors. Play therapy is integrated in all therapy including techniques from Relationship Development Intervention® and Floortime®. Students see their Program Manager (BCBA or associate) once a week, and home tutors can be arranged to implement the program in accordance with the family’s desires.

Social Thinking Groups

While most children are born with the innate ability to learn play skills and social interaction, children with social cognitive disabilities such as autism and Asperger Syndrome often have to be taught these skills in the same manner as more academic tasks. Early social skills often need to be deconstructed and then taught systematically to help the child gain the skills. These skills range from early joint attention to partner communication.

When students gain core social skills or have strong cognitive skills, they can learn to become a “social thinker.”A core philosophy of social thinking (as defined byMichelle Garcia Winner) is thinking and realizing that our behavior changes the way other people view and think about us, and then changing our behavior in order to keep others thinking about us the way we want them to. Some techniques taught to achieve this are thinking with our eyes, keeping our body in the group, expected and unexpected behaviors, social behavior mapping, and making social inferences in observations using literature and real-life examples.

Students with social cognitive deficits are assessed and placed into social thinking groups with other students with similar needs. Typically-developing peers are usually included. Social thinking groups include social learning through children’s literature, cooperation activities, movement activities, art, and some structured learning of a target lesson. Above all, students have fun and form bonds with their peers while developing their social thinking skills.

Educational therapy

Academic instruction will be provided on an individual or small group setting and usually, although not always, in conjunction with a home program. Common student goals relate to reading comprehension, writing conventions and process, and math problem solving.

Educational Advocacy

ABC can help families navigate the school system. We help prepare for IEP meetings, analyze IEP's, evaluations and placements, and help problem solve difficult situations. School observations are frequently a related service of a home program, but these services can be offered to families who do not currently have a home program.

Trainings

Regular trainings are held for new home tutors, more experienced tutors, and parenting classes or other special trainings can be provided on an as-needed basis.
